When Does It Get Cold In San Antonio

When Does It Get Cold In San Antonio

Let's talk about San Antonio weather. Specifically, when does the polar vortex finally decide to visit? Because, let's be honest, "winter" here is a very loose term.

I have a confession. I'm probably going to upset some people. But I think San Antonio stays warm longer than most folks are willing to admit.

The Great San Antonio Temperature Debate

People start busting out their jackets in, like, October. October! It's still shorts weather, people. Don't @ me.

I've seen it. The first slightly breezy day, and suddenly everyone's in a puffy vest. Are we prepping for a blizzard or just a brisk walk to the River Walk?

My unpopular opinion? True cold doesn't hit until late December. And even then, it’s more of a chilly suggestion than a deep freeze.

Chili Weather vs. Actual Chili Weather

San Antonians love their chili. And they'll claim any temperature below 70 is "chili weather."

But let's be real. Actual chili weather requires a roaring fire and the distinct possibility of frostbite. We’re talking shivering-in-your-boots weather. We're not usually seeing that until much later.

Besides, who needs chili to stay warm when you have enough spicy food options to raise your internal temperature several degrees?

Think about it. November is basically an extended summer. Thanksgiving is often spent outdoors, grilling. And let's not forget the occasional 80-degree day thrown in to keep us on our toes.

Then December rolls around. There is usually that brief period where you get the urge to wear your heavy winter coat. But you rarely need it.

Usually, there is the Christmas Eve scare! The frantic checking of weather forecasts to make sure your outdoor lighting display can survive. But the cold never lasts!

January: The Month of Mild Disappointment

January teases us with a few genuinely cold days. We might even see a light dusting of something vaguely resembling snow. It's more like confused sleet.

This is when everyone posts dramatic photos of their frozen sprinklers. As if we’re suddenly living in the Arctic Circle.

But, spoiler alert: by the afternoon, it's usually back up to 60 degrees. Back to the drawing board.

Then comes February. The month where the rest of the country is shoveling snow, and we're starting to see wildflowers pop up. It is the pre-spring spring. It's wonderful!

It's slightly insulting to those of us who actually want a real winter. Is that really too much to ask?

My Unscientific Cold Weather Timeline

So, based on my years of observation (and a healthy dose of personal bias), here's my official San Antonio Cold Weather Timeline:

Snow forecasted for San Antonio
Snow forecasted for San Antonio

October: The Great Jacket Panic. People overreacting to a slight breeze.

November: Denial. Summer refuses to leave. It's still tank top weather during the day.

Early December: A few chilly days to trick you into thinking winter is here. Don't fall for it.

Late December: The actual cold arrives... briefly. Usually just in time for Christmas.

January: Teasing cold snaps followed by immediate warm-ups. The month of meteorological whiplash.

February: Spring pretending to be winter. A cruel, beautiful joke.

The Psychological Impact of Mild Winters

Maybe we're just psychologically predisposed to think it's colder than it actually is. After all, we know it's supposed to be winter.

And society tells us that winter clothes are fashionable and festive. So, maybe we're just dressing for the season, not the weather.

Or maybe we just really, really like complaining about the weather. It's a universal pastime, after all.

The Truth About Texas Weather

The reality is, Texas weather is unpredictable. San Antonio gets the benefit of mild winters and long summers.

And I love those long summers. But a tiny part of me secretly yearns for a proper, snow-filled winter. Just once.

I'm sure there are people who enjoy the sunshine and mild weather. I do too. I'm just saying that let's not rush into winter clothes.

So, the next time someone tells you it's "freezing" in San Antonio when the temperature is a balmy 65 degrees, remember this article. And smile. You'll know the truth.

And if you see me wearing shorts in December, don't judge. I'm just living my truth.

Embrace The Warmth (While It Lasts)

Seriously though, let's enjoy these mild temperatures while we can. There will be time enough for bundling up later (probably).

Go have a picnic in November. Wear your sandals in December. And laugh at the people wearing parkas when it's 70 degrees. You'll be ready for the brief chill when it gets here.

Because when it finally does get cold in San Antonio, it won't last long. So, savor every minute of it. And maybe, just maybe, build a snowman out of the confused sleet.

And while you are at it, remember to check out your local San Antonio weather forecasts. They will most likely confuse you more. That is their job.

Don't forget to keep those winter clothes at the ready. After all, you never know. Texas likes to keeps you on your toes. Mother Nature might be reading this. And she might have a trick up her sleeve for you.

Until then, stay cool (or warm, depending on your perspective). And enjoy the beautiful, baffling weather that is San Antonio.

And remember: If you see me in shorts and a t-shirt in January, mind your business. I'm living my best, slightly rebellious, warm-weather-loving life.

Oh and one more thing. Don't forget to stock up on your favorite type of chili! The San Antonio classic will keep you warm, no matter how warm it is outside!
