How To Become A Good Designer

So, You Wanna Be a Designer, Huh?

Okay, cool. Everyone and their grandma's cat is a "designer" these days. But let's be real, some are just... better than others.

Want my brutally honest, slightly-unpopular opinion on becoming a good designer? Buckle up.

Forget the Fancy Software (For Now)

Adobe Photoshop? Illustrator? They're tools, not magic wands.

Seriously, stop obsessing over mastering every single feature. A masterful command of bezier curves won't save you from a terrible idea.

Focus on the basics: understanding color theory, typography, and layout.

Steal Like an Artist (But Don't Be a Jerk)

Okay, hear me out. Every great designer borrows inspiration from somewhere.

It's called research, folks! Don't outright copy, but analyze what makes a design effective. What colors are they using?

How is the content structured? Then, put your own spin on it. Transform, don't just duplicate!

Embrace the Ugly First Draft

Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. Your first attempt will probably be hideous.

That's okay! Get the ideas out of your head and onto the screen (or paper!). Embrace the suck.

Iterate. Refine. Keep going until your eyes don't bleed when you look at it.

Learn to Take Criticism (Without Crying)

Design is subjective. Not everyone will love your creations.

Get used to it. Constructive criticism is your friend. It helps you grow, even if it stings at first.

Listen to the feedback, consider it, and use it to improve. Unless the feedback is "This looks like my toddler drew it." Then maybe cry a little. Just a little.

Develop Your "Taste" (It's Not Just About Liking Avocado Toast)

Good taste isn't innate. It's cultivated. Expose yourself to good design.

Visit museums (online ones count!), browse design blogs, and pay attention to the world around you. Notice what works and what doesn't.

Train your eye to recognize good composition, effective typography, and compelling visuals.

Practice, Practice, Practice (Even When You Don't Want To)

No amount of theory will make you a good designer without practice.

Design something every day, even if it's just a silly poster for your cat. The more you design, the better you'll become.

Try recreating your favourite designs in your own way. Experiment with colour palettes and new fonts.

Build a Portfolio That Doesn't Suck

Your portfolio is your calling card. It's how you show the world what you're capable of.

Only include your best work. Quality over quantity, always. A small collection of amazing projects beats a mountain of mediocrity.

And for the love of all that is holy, get rid of that Comic Sans project from high school.

Networking: Be Nice, Not Needy

Connect with other designers. Attend online or in-person events.

Learn from their experiences and share your own. But avoid being a constant "pick-my-brain" type of person.

Offer value to the community, and people will naturally want to help you.

Stay Curious (The World is Constantly Changing)

Design trends come and go faster than you can say "flat design." Don't get stuck in your ways.

Keep learning new things, exploring new techniques, and experimenting with new ideas. The best designers are lifelong learners.

And always, always question everything.

Bonus Tip: Develop a Thick Skin and a Good Sense of Humor

Design can be a tough profession. Expect rejection, criticism, and creative blocks.

Learn to laugh at yourself (and your mistakes). A sense of humor will get you through the rough patches.

And remember, even the greatest designers started somewhere. Believe in yourself, keep practicing, and never give up on your dreams. Unless your dream is designing websites in Comic Sans. Then maybe rethink things.
