Google Fiber Irvine Review

Google Fiber Irvine Review

Okay, Irvine. Let's talk Google Fiber. Everyone seems obsessed. Is it truly the internet promised land?

My (Slightly) Unpopular Google Fiber Irvine Review

I live in Irvine. I have Google Fiber. Prepare yourselves, folks, because I'm about to drop some truth bombs. Not everyone agrees with me but here's my take.

The Speed Thing

Yes, it's fast. Blazing fast, even. My cat could probably download a movie faster than I can make popcorn. Is it necessary? That's the question.

I mean, how many cat videos can one person really stream at once? Do I need to download entire seasons of my favorite shows in mere seconds? Maybe not.

My old internet was…adequate. I could watch Netflix. I could browse the internet. My expectations were already pretty high before upgrading.

The Price Point Dilemma

Let's be real. It ain't free. Faster internet costs more money. Shocker, I know.

I have definitely spent less on worse internet options in the past. I did that to save money, which I used to spend on eating out.

Is the speed worth the extra dough? It depends. Are you a hardcore gamer? Do you work from home and constantly upload massive files? Maybe.

The Installation Saga

Oh, the installation. This is where things get interesting. Picture this: a perfectly manicured Irvine lawn… now with a small trench through it.

Okay, they fixed it. Mostly. But for a week, my lawn looked like it had survived a miniature earthquake. It still wasn't a completely clean job.

The installation crew? Super nice! But also super… thorough. Lots of drilling. Lots of explaining. Lots of hoping they didn't accidentally cut the wrong wire.

The Reliability Factor

Knock on wood, it's been pretty reliable. No major outages to report. Which is great, obviously.

But let's not pretend other internet providers are constantly down. I experienced a handful of outages before switching, that was about it.

I do appreciate the consistent speed, though. No more buffering during crucial moments of online games. Finally!

The Customer Service Experience

I haven't had to call customer service much. That's a good sign, right? When I did contact them, it was pleasant enough.

They seem genuinely helpful. Which is a refreshing change from some other companies I've dealt with in the past. No complaints here.

I did get stuck on hold once for a little while but that's inevitable. Nothing crazy long so I survived.

The Irvine Factor

Irvine is already pretty tech-savvy. Are we really pushing the boundaries of internet usage here? Maybe.

Everyone here has a fancy phone and a laptop. We are all glued to our screens. Having super-fast internet just fuels the addiction, doesn't it?

Maybe we should all just go outside and enjoy the sunshine. Just kidding. I'm going to binge-watch another show.

So, Is Google Fiber Worth It in Irvine?

Here's my totally not-so-humble opinion: it's good. Really good. But not life-changing. Okay, maybe slightly life-changing.

If you're obsessed with speed and reliability, and don't mind paying a bit extra, then go for it. Google Fiber delivers, mostly.

If you're content with your current internet, and don't feel the need to download entire libraries of content in seconds, stick with what you've got. You'll probably survive, and save money.

Ultimately, the decision is yours. Just remember my words as you're streaming that 4K movie faster than you can say "buffering." I am still happy I upgraded.

Now, if you will excuse me, I've got to go find that trench in my lawn. It's probably hiding under a rogue weed.
