Fear The Walking Dead Episode 1

Fear The Walking Dead Episode 1

Okay, let's be honest. We all love a good zombie apocalypse, right? But sometimes, the prequel hits a little...different. Today, we're diving headfirst into the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead. Yeah, the one before everyone knew the world was ending. Buckle up!

First things first: Los Angeles. Sunshine, beaches, and...flickering news reports about strange illnesses. Instead of panicked mobs, we get a slow burn. Which, I gotta say, makes sense! Nobody expects the zombie apocalypse to announce itself with fireworks. But did it have to be so slow?

Our Protagonist: Not Exactly Rick Grimes

Enter the Clark family. Madison, the guidance counselor. Travis, the English teacher. Nick, the struggling addict. Alicia, the overachiever. A pretty normal, if slightly dysfunctional, family. But where's the charismatic, take-charge leader? Let's be real, Rick Grimes set the bar pretty high.

I'm not saying they're bad characters! They're just...relatable. Like, too relatable. You can see yourself in their shoes. Making questionable decisions. Yelling at their kids. Trying to figure out if that rash is just allergies or the end of the world. The initial reaction of seeing Nick run over by a car is hilarious. It felt like, "Oh, boy, what has he done now?" rather than "Oh, no, is he dead?".

That Hospital Scene

Oh, boy. That hospital scene. Nick wakes up in a hazy, drugged-out state. He witnesses a truly gruesome attack. Is it real? Is it a hallucination? The show does a great job of keeping us guessing. But let's be real. The suspense was almost unbearable. Especially when the infected start gnawing on a poor doctor. I thought "Okay, this is definitely more than just the flu!"

"They're sick. They need help." - Travis Manawa, bless his heart.

Oh, Travis. You sweet, naive soul. You're about to have your world rocked. Good luck with that whole "helping" thing. You're gonna need it.

The "Is It Real?" Debate

One of the most interesting aspects of this first episode is the skepticism. Nobody wants to believe it's zombies. They write it off as drugs, mental illness, or just plain bad luck. Which, again, feels realistic! Who jumps straight to "zombie apocalypse" these days? It's always the last thing on anyone's mind.

The show also uses the family drama to hide the impending doom in plain sight. The son of Travis is living with his mom. Madison and Travis are trying to build a family. The children are always fighting each other. These stories blend with the rise of the zombies, to create an entertaining opening episode.

But here's my slightly unpopular opinion. All the uncertainty? It drags on. It's understandable, sure, but after a while, you just want to shout at the screen. "They're zombies! Run!". But alas, they continue to try to rationalize everything.

The Ending

The episode ends with Nick escaping the hospital. He is now desperate to warn everyone. Madison decides to believe him, at least a little. Travis? Still skeptical. Predictably, he chooses to search for Nick, to bring him home. He is the true hero of this story arc! The moment is suspenseful, leaving you wondering what comes next.

Overall, the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead is a solid start. It's not perfect. It's slow. It is overly dramatic. However, the show lays the groundwork for what is to come. It's an intriguing exploration of how ordinary people cope with the unthinkable. And who doesn't love watching the world fall apart, from the comfort of their own couch?

So, did it grab you? Did you find it as frustratingly realistic as I did? Let me know what you think!
