Fallout New Vegas Ulysses

Okay, let’s talk about Ulysses. You know, from the Lonesome Road DLC in Fallout: New Vegas? Yeah, that guy.
He’s...complicated. A lot of people seem to love him. Think he's super deep and philosophical. Me? I think he needs to chill out with the metaphor sticks and just tell me what he actually wants.
The Man, The Myth, The… Mailman?
Seriously, what is he? He's got this whole thing about nations, flags, and the importance of forging your own path. Sounds cool, right? Like a gritty history professor who’s seen too much.
Must Read
But then you realize he's mostly mad because you, the Courier, accidentally nuked his town. Oops?
I mean, collateral damage happens in the Mojave. Ask the Powder Gangers! Or Caesar. Or anyone, really. Blame is a dish best served… lukewarm? In a tin can?
It's hard to feel too bad for him. He's spent the entire DLC plotting revenge. Which, fair enough. But then he monologues at you for what feels like an eternity. It's less "epic showdown" and more "extended philosophy lecture with missiles."

Flags, Metaphors, and Explosions
And the flags! Oh god, the flags. Everything has to be a symbol. Every crack in the road, every ED-E beep, every Radroach scurrying by. It's exhausting!
Look, I get it. He wants to make a point about the dangers of clinging to ideologies. He's trying to say something profound about the cyclical nature of history. Great. Can we just get to the part where I shoot something?
The DLC itself is...fine. Lots of tunnels. Lots of Deathclaws. The scenery is suitably apocalyptic. But it all feels like window dressing for Ulysses' grand pronouncements. Which, frankly, I'm starting to tune out.

Is it just me, or does he come across as a bit… self-important? He acts like you personally ruined his life. Dude, I deliver packages! Occasionally, those packages explode. It's a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it!
Unpopular Opinion Time?
Here it is: I think Ulysses is overrated. Okay, breathe. Don't get angry. This is just my opinion!
His motivations are murky. His dialogue is pretentious. And frankly, I'm not convinced he's as smart as he thinks he is.
I'd rather hang out with Boone and listen to him grumble about the Legion. At least Boone is straightforward. You know exactly where you stand with Boone: Somewhere between "potential friend" and "someone who might shoot you if you look at him funny."

Ulysses? He's like that one friend who always has to one-up you with their existential angst. “Oh, you had a bad day? Well, I experienced the crushing weight of societal decay and the inevitable triumph of entropy!”
Please, just let me loot these pre-war buildings in peace!
Maybe I'm Missing Something
Look, I'm not saying Ulysses is a terrible character. He's certainly memorable. And I appreciate that Obsidian was trying to do something different with him. Something deep and meaningful.

But sometimes, I just want to shoot things. I don't want to ponder the nature of identity while dodging missiles. Is that so wrong?
Maybe I'm just not smart enough to appreciate his philosophical genius. Maybe I'm too busy trying to survive in the Mojave to care about the nuances of nation-building.
Or maybe, just maybe, Ulysses needs to lighten up a little. Crack a smile. Tell a joke. You know, be a little less… Ulysses-y.
So, what do you think? Am I completely off base here? Or does anyone else feel like Ulysses could use a good dose of Mojave sunshine and a less existential crisis? Let me know in the comments. Just… try not to use too many metaphors, okay?
