Ditto Disguises August 2021

Okay, let's talk about something weird. Something really weird. Remember August 2021 in Pokémon GO? Specifically, remember the Ditto disguises?
It was, shall we say, a choice. A bold one. Maybe even…a questionable one. Hear me out.
The Disguises Themselves
We got a whole bunch of new Pokémon that Ditto could be hiding as. Sudowoodo? Okay, kind of makes sense. Dwebble? Getting there. But then… we had stuff like Foongus. I'm not saying Foongus is bad. It's a mushroom. It exists.
Must Read
But come on! A mushroom pretending to be a mushroom? That's just lazy undercover work. It's like me wearing a t-shirt that says "I am not suspicious" while trying to sneak into a concert.
And don't even get me started on Koffing. A floating ball of poison gas pretending to be…itself? Seriously, Ditto, where's the effort?

My Unpopular Opinion
Here's where I might lose some of you. I think... I think the disguises were too predictable.
Yes, I know! That sounds crazy. But think about it. Every time a new Pokémon GO event rolled around, and a certain common Pokémon started spawning slightly more often, everyone immediately screamed, "Ditto!"
And they were usually right! It took away the fun of the surprise. It turned hunting for a sneaky Ditto into a predictable, almost mundane task. Where's the thrill of the hunt if you already know the prey's favorite hiding spot?

It's like watching a magic show where you know all the tricks. The illusion is gone.
The Conspiracy Theories
Of course, the disguises sparked a million conspiracy theories. Was Niantic trying to tell us something? Did the specific Pokémon chosen have some secret significance we were missing?

Probably not. But it was fun to speculate, wasn't it? Maybe Sudowoodo was chosen because it's known for pretending to be a tree, and that's a metaphor for Ditto's entire existence! Or maybe someone at Niantic just really likes Sudowoodo.
The Aftermath
August 2021 came and went. The Ditto disguises changed (eventually). We moved on to new events, new challenges, and new Pokémon. But the memory of those slightly-too-obvious disguises lingers.
It taught us a valuable lesson, I think. A lesson about expectations. About the thrill of the unexpected. And about the fact that sometimes, the simplest disguise is the most effective (unless you're a mushroom disguised as a mushroom).

Maybe that's the real genius of it all! Niantic knew we'd overthink it. They knew we'd dissect every choice, looking for hidden meanings. And all along, the answer was right there in front of us: Ditto just likes being a little weird.
So next time you're out catching Pokémon, remember August 2021. Remember the Ditto disguises. And remember that sometimes, the best way to hide is in plain sight. Or, you know, as a Koffing pretending to be a Koffing. Whatever works.
And let's be honest, finding a Ditto, no matter how obvious the disguise, is still pretty darn cool. Even if it’s just pretending to be a common Pokémon, it's still a Ditto. And that's something to celebrate. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go look for suspicious mushrooms.
