Okay, here it comes. My unpopular opinion: I think Merle had more character development in his relatively short time on the show than Daryl has had in, like, ten seasons.

Daryl is stoic. Which is fine. But after a while, it gets a little… samey. Merle started as a villain, evolved into something almost resembling an anti-hero, and then ultimately sacrificed himself to protect the group. A flawed redemption arc, maybe, but a redemption arc nonetheless!

And let's be real, his death scene was way more impactful than anything Daryl has done lately. Fight me.

I'm not saying Merle was a good person. He definitely wasn’t. But he was a compelling character. He made mistakes. He was messy. He was human. And in a world where everyone is trying so hard to be strong and resilient, it was nice to see someone who was just… trying to survive, in their own messed-up way.

Daryl broods. Merle brashly says whatever's on his mind, consequences be damned. Maybe it's just me, but I find the latter a little more… honest. Even if what he's saying is completely offensive.

Look, I'm not saying Merle should have gotten his own spin-off or anything. But I do think he deserves a little more appreciation. He was a vital part of The Walking Dead's early seasons, adding a much-needed dose of chaos and unpredictability.

Maybe, just maybe, we were too quick to write him off as the bad guy. Maybe, just maybe, he was a little bit misunderstood.
