Characters From A Christmas Carol

Okay, let's talk about A Christmas Carol. We all know it. We all (probably) love it. But, like any classic, it's ripe for a little playful poking, right? Prepare yourselves. Some unpopular opinions are brewing.

Scrooge: Overrated Grump or Secret Softie?

Ebenezer Scrooge. The poster child for holiday misery. We’re supposed to hate him at the start. But honestly? I kind of get him. Think about it. He's been burned in love. He's dedicated his life to work. Maybe he's just…efficient? Okay, maybe really efficient. But isn't there a tiny part of you that admires his dedication? No? Just me? Fine.

He’s also got amazing quotes. "Bah! Humbug!" is the perfect response to basically anything mildly irritating. Try it at your next family gathering. You're welcome.

Bob Cratchit: Doormat or Saint?

Sweet, long-suffering Bob Cratchit. He's practically a Christmas angel. But let's be real: the guy lets Scrooge walk all over him. I mean, the man is working in a freezing office for peanuts! At what point do you say, "Enough!" and demand a raise? Or, you know, at least a decent scarf? Maybe Bob needs a little bit of Scrooge's…grit. Just a tiny bit, though. We don't want him turning into a humbug.

Plus, Mrs. Cratchit seems like she wears the pants in that family. Bob is just happy to be there, and he is happy for having simple things in life.

Tiny Tim: Too Pure for This World?

Oh, Tiny Tim. The epitome of innocence. "God bless us, everyone!" Cue the waterworks. He's undeniably adorable. But is he…a little too good? Is it just me, or does he feel a tad…manufactured? Like Dickens cranked up the sentimentality dial to eleven? I know, I know, I'm going to Christmas hell for saying that. But someone had to say it!

Also, let's be honest, if Tiny Tim didn't get sick would anyone have cared that much about the Cratchits? Maybe not. He's the ultimate emotional leverage for Scrooge.

The Ghosts: Effective Therapy or Terrifying Trauma?

Okay, the ghosts. The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present, and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Talk about an intervention! They put Scrooge through some serious emotional whiplash. Is it effective? Yes. Is it also borderline psychological torture? Debatable. I mean, showing someone their own gravestone? That's intense, even for Christmas. I might have filed a lawsuit. At least asked for hazard pay.

“Are there no prisons?” said Scrooge. “And the Union workhouses?” demanded the Ghost. “Are they still in operation?”

The Ghost of Christmas Present is my favorite. He's jolly, but firm. And he has that awesome cornucopia throne. Now that's a power move.

Jacob Marley: The Most Misunderstood?

Don’t forget Jacob Marley. Poor old Marley. He's dragging chains around for eternity as a warning. Talk about a thankless job! He really is the unsung hero of the story, because if he hadn't visited Scrooge, then Scrooge would have continued being a miser and we wouldn't have a Christmas story to tell. And he doesn't even get any credit! Maybe we should start a "Justice for Marley" campaign. Who's with me?

Ultimately, A Christmas Carol is a great story. It reminds us to be kind, generous, and to appreciate what we have. But it's also fun to dissect the characters and see them in a new light. Maybe I'm just a Scrooge in disguise, but I think a little bit of skepticism keeps things interesting.
