It can get the job done (producing lots of energy!), but you're always a little worried something might…go wrong.

It involves splitting uranium atoms which releases a HUGE amount of heat, which boils water, which spins turbines, which…okay, it's complicated. But the bottom line is we get electricity. The problem? Uranium is finite. There's only so much of it buried in the Earth. And, let's be honest, dealing with nuclear waste is not exactly a walk in the park. More like a carefully planned, decades-long geological storage project.

Another unpopular opinion: maybe we should use all the nuclear waste to power giant, glowing mushrooms. Think of the possibilities! Eco-friendly lighting AND a sustainable snack source. I'm just spitballing here, people.

Metals: From Smartphones to Skyscrapers (and the Ever-Growing E-Waste Mountain)

Finally, let’s give it up for metals. Copper, iron, gold (shiny!), aluminum… the building blocks of modern society! From your phone to that ridiculously tall skyscraper downtown, metals are everywhere. They're strong, conductive, and generally awesome.

The downside? They don't grow on trees (duh!). We have to dig them out of the ground, which takes a lot of energy and can be pretty disruptive to the environment. And, what happens when we're done with them? E-waste! Mountains of discarded electronics slowly leaching toxic materials into the ground. Super fun!

And my most unpopular opinion of all: Maybe… just maybe… we don't need a new smartphone every year. I know, I know, blasphemy! But think about it: that old phone is probably still perfectly functional. You're just trading it in for a slightly better camera and a new set of emojis.
